INTRODUCTION IN IELTS WRITING TASK 2

I. What are the parts in the introduction of an IELTS writing Task 2?

–General statement: background information leading to the topic
(paraphrase of the question OR describe a relevant phenomenon)
–Thesis statement: the topic of the essay (+ writer’s opinions).

II. Sample Introductions of ELTS Writing Task 2:

Below are different ways to write introductions of 5 writing questions. You can produce the 3rd, or the 4th version in addition to the 2 versions of introduction for each of the following questions.

1. Question 1:

   Because sustaining life on planet Earth is increasingly difficult, some people think that more money should be spent on researching life on other planets, such as Mars. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Introduction 1:

Sustaining life in outer space is a pipe dream for human beings, as the Earth has proven increasingly harsh to live on. Some people assert that more investment should be made for research into the possibility of living on other planets; however, I strongly believe that such money is better spent solving current global problems.

Introduction 2:

With the advancement of technology in space travel, explorations into outer space to seek future residential planets are popular ideas in the recent decade. However, instead of spending money on space research, I am convinced that such investment in problem solving for current global issues would yield more impact, bettering lives on Earth.

2. Question 2:

   Instead of providing foreign aid, governments should stick to helping people who are in need in their country. Do you agree or disagree?

Introduction 1:

Life is challenging for people everywhere in the world, thus governments are increasingly prompted to reach out to those who are in need. Some argue that such help should be restricted within national boundaries, but I believe that humanitarian aid should not differentiate between nationalities.

Introduction 2:

Government assistance has played an important role in the life of many communities, especially in the Global South. However, whether government aid should be given to other nations is still debatable. In my opinion, if help can be given, there should not be any racial or geographical restrictions.

3. Question 3:

   Some people think that it is good for a country’s culture to import foreign movies and entertainment media. Others think that it is better to produce these locally. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Introduction 1:

As the need for mutual understanding among countries increases, foreign movies and media are widely craved; however, many prefer cultural arts and entertainment to be made locally. As for me, I am convinced that cross-border exchanges of cultural media benefit all consumers.

Introduction 2:

There is an irresistible flux of foreign movies and television shows from Western countries to the rest of the world. Many people advocate the good of this trend while others are in favour of locally made cultural arts and entertainment. In my opinion, everyone should be exposed to international ideas of life and culture.

4. Question 4:

   In recent years, the family structure and family role have changed.  Do you think these changes are positive or negative?

Introduction 1:

As global society enters an intellectual age, families have transformed tremendously from a multi-generational and patriarchal units.  At present, nuclear, no-child, and egalitarian structures are becoming the norm. There are obvious reasons and benefits of this trend.

Introduction 2:

In recent years, families have become smaller.  The roles of husband and wives have also become more equal. This change has arisen from many complex factors, and I believe the effects exerted are positive for global societies.

5. Question 5:

   Some people believe government should use public funds to build train and subway lines to reduce traffic congestion. Others think that building more and wider roads is better. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Introduction 1:

With the overwhelming speed of urbanization, traffic jams have long been a nuisance to city dwellers. This issue can be solved in two ways: by establishing new train and subway systems, or expanding and opening new roads. I believe either of these different measures can be effective, but the context will determine which has more merits.

Introduction 2:

Traffic jams afflict many urban communities, developing and developed alike. To solve this problem, some suggest increasing the infrastructure of train and subway lines. Others believe developing road systems will decongest traffic issues. In my opinion, both methods have their own values.  

(Opinion for the conclusion: the most suitable solution depends on the transportation needs and realities where this new infrastructure will be erected.)
