Speaking about Basketball

BASKETBALL

1.    Are you interested in basketball?

Yeah, kind of, but not very much. I used to learn how to play basketball at high school, and I did spend some time practicing it, you know, dribbling (nhồi bóng) the ball between two legs, passing the ball behind the back from one hand to another, passing the ball to teammates, or basket shooting. (ném vào rổ)

I like watching summaries of basketball matches on Facebook. Also, dunk competitions (cuộc thi đập bóng vào rổ) are really intriguing (hấp dẫn) to me, and most of the time they strike me with awe (làm kinh ngạc) for the unimaginable and fast movements before the dunk. For sure, they really entertain me.

2.    How many players are on a basketball team?

There are maximum 5 players on the court at any one time, but they can have substitutes (thay thế) at any time and with how many times they like. As a whole team, the a team roster (danh sách cầu thủ) may vary from 10 to 12 players, so 5-7 are expected to be bench players while the best five of the team are in the starting lineup. (đội hình ra sân)

3.    What are the positions on a basketball team?

The court is divided into parts which are positioned by five players in each team. They are Point Guard, Defensive Guard, Center, Offensive forward and Defensive Forward. However, when the game proceeds, the players are allowed to move as they wish depending on the reactions from the opposing team.

4.    How long is a basketball game?

For most basketball games, the match lasts in 4 quarters (hiệp chính) of 12 minutes each according to National Basketbal Association. If a tie happens after four main quarters, extra quarters which are called first, second, third … overtime (hiệp phụ) each lasting 5 minutes will be played until the winner is found.

Including breaks (nghỉ giữa 2 hiệp), timeouts (dừng trận đấu để hội ý), and pauses for injuries or ball retrieval (chạy đi lấy bóng), the normal duration for a game is about 2.5 hours.

5.    How is a basketball game scored?

A good shot from outside the three point arc (vòng cách rổ 6m) will score 3 points. A successful throw within the three point arc will score 2 points. A free throw scores 1 point, and the number of free throws is accumulated in the game until it reaches a certain number for free throws at the free throw line.(vạch ném phạt) This number of free throws awarded to a team also depends on where the fouls are commited. (nơi phạm lỗi)

6.    What are the fouls in basketball?

Violations in basketball include travelling (taking more than one step without bouncing the ball), double dribble (picking the ball up dribbling, stopping then dribbling again with two hands), goaltending (a defensive player interferes with the ball travelling downwards towards the basket) and back court violation (once the ball passes the half way line the offensive team cannot take the ball back over the half way line). (from www.rulesofsport.com)

7.    Who is your favorite basketball player?

Michael Jordan, the legend of basketball is my favourite player not only because he excelled in the court, but also because he is the only sports player that has been enlisted as a billionaire. Of course, that wealth comes from his business besides playing sport.

8.    Why are basketball player usually tall?

You can imagine how advantageous a player is when he is taller than his opponents, especially in dunking. The basket is around 2.5 meters high, so taller players do have competitive advantages. (lợi thế cạnh tranh)

9.    Can short people be good basketball players?

Yes they can, I can’t tell you the exact names but there are some short members of some basketball teams that have won respect from their team mates and rivals (đối thủ). Actually, short players are faster in their reactions, so the techniques of dribbling the ball, or passing the opponent can be done more swiftly, (nhanh) and thus can bring about chances of scoring.

10. Have you ever played basketball? How was it?

Yes, I did, and I was out of breath. (mệt đứt hơi) You know playing in a team, you have substitutes, but playing street basketball, there is no one replacing you. Imagine that I had to run around the court for half an hour without breaks or substitutions, it was just over my limit.

11. Do you follow professional basketball?

No, I don’t. I just enjoy some brief summaries of matches, and even don’t care about which teams are really playing. Just pure momentary entertainment, that’s it.
