TASK 1

The maps illustrate the changes that have taken place in a city since 1950 till now.

In 1950, a small residential area with only 20000 people lied to the north of the business district, occupying a circular land where two thoroughfares (trục giao thông chính) running north-south and west-east intersected. A government building was situated on the other side of the river for people to approach after crossing the bridge from the business district while an airport was in the east end of the city next to the other main road.

Now, a lake has been created and stretches from east to west of the city taking water in from the river in the west and releasing water at a dam built near the airport in the east of the city. A new business district has also been established on the southern bank of the reservoir, after the bridge. In that new downtown area, the old government building has been expanded, whereas a new and larger one has been in place in the southern edge of the city. Moreover, South of the river, another main road runs from the west to intersect with the north-south road. It then bends north – east to cross the lake via a new road bridge and joins the other thoroughfare leading to the airport which has been significantly enlarged southward. Also, with a population of 200000 people, the residential area around the lake is now almost ten times its size in 1950.

Overall, time has witnessed a transformation of the area from a small riverside to a populated lakeside city with expanded infrastructure.

TASK 2

Some people say that children should go to school as young as possible, while others believe that children should go to school from at least 7 years old. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some advocate early education for children and send them to school as early as possible while others believe the proper age for schooling should be seven or more. This essay scrutinizes (xem xét kĩ) different aspects of these views.

On the one hand, earlier education for children is beneficial for them in numerous respects (trong nhiều khía cạnh). First, in this era of fast development, it has never been more well acknowledged than ever before in the job market that when children can finish schooling earlier than their peers, they will have more advantages in finding decent jobs and more time to advance in their career. Secondly, for some geniuses, learning is such an easy task for them that they may start going to school very early and finish university right in their teenage. For these cases, keeping children in the same incremental progress (phát triển ít ít) in education as their peers is apparently nonsense. Third, in terms of knowledge gained, the more time in official education may mean the more children can learn, and the more better off (tốt hơn, phát triển hơn) they can be in their life-long learning. (học suốt đời)

On the other hand, keeping children till seven years old before sending them to school also has its own merits. Thanks to that children may have a full childhood with favourable stress-free time for personality development. This seemingly late start of schooling can enable them to spend time meaningfully to form some traits of character (nét tính cách) and sweet memories which can influence their well-being in the rest of their lives. Besides, for the majority of children, their cognitive and reasoning capabilities, (khả năng nhận thức và lập luận) especially their ability to distinguish between concrete subjects (vật cụ thể) and abstract concepts (khái niệm trừu tượng), develop as they get older. It would be very miserable for some of them, before seven years old, to learn calculations with pure numbers on the paper instead of counting how many birds or toys they see in a picture. Also, textbooks of some subjects like literature, biology, and civic education (giáo dục công dân) are designed for students at certain ages. This may make teaching early starter of age 10 about romantic love, human reproductive organs, or the law to appear awkward.

In conclusion, I believe that sending children to school at seven years old or earlier both have benefits in different ways, but potential risks are still lurking in each of these decisions. That is why parents should adjust the schooling age appropriately for each of their offspring through observation and constant communication with them to make sure that they can enjoy both personality development and academic achievements.
