Tax on fast food: tax raise price, discourage people to buy, for those who cant resist temptation, high price reduce their purchase. The convenience is overshadowed by high cost, people may lean more to the double target of saving money and eating healthily than eating conveniently and indulging themselves in proven harmful eating habits.
Tax on fast food strengthens competition of healthy food providers: better price, diverse dishes, highlight value for money of healthy food. Tax on fast food discourages fast food restaurant => customers’ less exposure to such food choices.
The essay:
A globally recognized and alarming trend is the rising obesity and malnutrition in all ages and all walks of life. I believe this has a close connection to the consumption of fast food, and thus imposing a tax on these convenience meals will solve the problem.
On the one hand, putting a levy on fast food can discourage people from consuming it. Indeed, pizzas or hamburgers can be daily consumer products sensitive to price changes, so only with a slight jerk in the bill for convenience meals, the ripple may be felt strongly in the whole fast food industry. Obviously, with tax, the higher price may curb the purchase of convenience seekers or reduce the consumption of fast food lovers. When the convenience is overshadowed by high cost, people may lean more to the double target of saving money and eating healthily than eating conveniently and indulging themselves in proven harmful dietary habits. This mentality can make fast food fans to wean off their favourite meals and seek more reasonable alternatives.
Indeed, having to pay more for fast food will shift people to healthier meals. A tax on fast food will directly strengthen competition of healthy food providers who can offer better prices, diverse dishes, and more value for money of healthy food. It also discourages fast food restaurants to reduce their presence, and thus limits customers’ exposure to such food choices. A la carte restaurants also feel the heat for transforming their costly operation with menus of hundreds of dishes to a more competitive mode of providing food which is home-made like and ready as take-aways. When the door is closed to fast food, another door will be widely open for healthier meals for daily consumption.
In conclusion, introducing a tax on fast food diet can turn people into reluctant consumers of burgers, pizzas, and the like, and drive them towards healthier eating.
