  1. Passage:  While people might be understanding if you
    have problems with language when studying abroad, they are less likely to be
    forgiving if you break the unwritten social rules.

     Statement:  People may sympathize with you about how difficult it is to study English abroad. 

2. Passage:  Did you know, for example, that in Japan it is considered rude to blow your nose in public.

     Statement:  Japanese people think it is impolite to blow your nose around other people.

3. Passage:  Italians like it when you show your appreciation of their cooking, so never refuse a second plateful.

     Statement:  Italian meals usually consists of several courses

4. Passage:  In Muslim cultures people avoid using the left hand to give and receive. Many people in these countries eat only with their right hands so they might consider you impolite if you use your left.

     Statement:  Muslims will think you do not know how to behave appropriately if you use your left hand for eating.

5. Passage:  Up to 10% of China’s 290 million children are already believed to be overweighed or obese and that percentage is expected to have doubled a decade from now.

     Statement:  It is forecast that the proportion of overweight or obese children in China will reach 20% in ten years’ time.

6. Passage:  Everything is achieved under the guise of market research. But it is obviously a blatant exercise in the manipulation of people’s fears.

     Statement:  Market research techniques are used as a means of taking advantage of people’s fears.

7. Passage:  Not surprisingly, feelings like doubt, fear, anxiety, and pessimism are usually associated with failure. Yet, if properly harnessed, they are the driving force behind success, the very engines of genius.

     Statement:  The engines of genius are the driving forces behind success.

8. Passage:  Mankind need to be pessimistic to survive.

     Statement:  But survival dictates that mankind remain ever sanguine.

9. Passage:  After the trauma of self-editing, it helps to show the text to other people, friends perhaps, and to offer a synopsis of the book, or an outline if it is a text book.

     Statement:  When a writer has a draft of the text already, it is a good idea to have a summary for friends, etc. to look at.

10. Passage:  Abandon writing? Nonsense.   

Statement:  Writing is compelling.
